Update on Hardee's Ads -- Good news!

From the American Family Association:

Another victory! Hardees / Carl's Jr. pulls offensive ads
Your efforts made the difference!

Last week, we asked you to take action encouraging your local television stations to reject two sexually-charged ads by Hardees and Carl's Jr. (CKE Restaurants, Inc.).
We're glad to report that your efforts made a difference! Late last week, CKE cancelled both commercials as dozens of TV stations promised to reject the tasteless ads.
That's not all! In a highly unusual move for the company, it also removed the ads from its websites. Remember, this is the same company who hired Hugh Hefner and Paris Hilton as their company spokespersons in the past. Your message is being heard!

Consider contacting Hardee's to thank them for their decision. Call and leave a voice message at: 1-877-799-STAR (7827)

Hardee's -- Offensive Ads

I know we don't have a Hardee's here, but if you have the opportunity to eat at one, please don't -- and if you get the chance, let them know why you won't give them any of your (God's?!) money.

Prayer request

This is from my friend, Marti. I wanted to share with you so you would pray with us:

"On Wednesday, September 5th, my ex husband, Greg (he is the one that has colon cancer), was driving/riding his motorcycle on the elevated section of I-20. An 18 wheeler changed lanes and hit him. It knocked him off his bike and into the west bound lane of I-20. By the grace of God, he was not run over by the 18 wheeler (but his Harley was) nor was he hit by any oncoming traffic. The cars in the westbound lane were far enough away from him that they saw him tumbling down the guard rail and were able to stop in time.

He has allot of road rash on both arms and his legs. His leg was injured during the accident causing his ligaments and tendons to be torn/ripped. He will be in a brace for at least 2 months.

Please pray that this accident will open his eyes and his heart to start living his life right with God so he can/will be around to see our girls grow up and that his injuries will quickly heal."

Thursday -- First Classes at Tech

David said he had a good first day. He didn't tell me much; he did tell me something about hand washing and vital signs. He has check-offs for both of those which are already scheduled (but he either didn't tell me for when or I don't remember). He said one class is both lecture and lab and the other class is lecture only. He'll have to be at Tech every morning (M-F) at 8:00; he finishes at 11:00MWF but not until 2:00 or 2:30 on TR.

Yesterday he was able to meet me at the Activity Center at 4:00 and we played racquetball and then did 4 laps around the inside track. That was fun. So I didn't go to the group class, but that's okay -- I'll do that some other time when David can't go with me.

I got to stay with Joshua at IMOT for a little while this morning to check in with Karl on how things were going. His first week seems to have gone well. The main thing Karl told me about was how he's doing electric stimulation of his pecs and biceps to try to help him with his arm movements. They'll do an evaluation at the end of the three weeks to measure his progress from IMOT.

I'll talk to David soon and see how his day went.

First Day at Tech

So David was on campus at Tech early, but he went to the bookstore and bought his books, got a shot, and was measured for his uniform. He said there are 45 in his class with 7 males. I'm glad he's not the only one! We knew the demographics would be skewed. Then he had his CPR class, which was scheduled from 1-5, but he was done and home by 3-something, I believe. It was not quite as he expected, I think.

I don't know anything about Joshua's IMOT today. I should get to check in with Karl when I take him in the morning.

I'm taking my gym bag to go to another (new to me) group exercise class tomorrow.

Tomorrow at lunch is our Back to School Social for the accounting majors. It's from 11-1, but I'm in class from 9:30-12:15 -- but I'll go after I get out of class.

I think Jayden's first two days have gone well. She did great yesterday. She had a long day, from 7:45 until 4:45, almost the whole time the center is open. Today she was there from about 8:15-3:45. She cried when I took her this morning. Not bad, but it's unusual for her to cry at all. I think she had a good day, though. Something strange: she wouldn't eat her cheese I sent for her lunch. She wouldn't eat the cheese I put on her plate last night at supper, either. This is the same girl who I couldn't keep out of the cheese Sunday night (and usually can't). I'm not sure what's up there....

I'm putting new pictures on Shutterfly; mostly of birthdays.

The Price of Children

I like this:

The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to18 and came up with $160,140 for a middle income family. Talk about sticker shock! That doesn't even touch college tuition. But $160,140 isn't so bad ifyou break it down.

It translates into: * $8,896.66 a year,* $741.38 a month, or* $171.08 a week. * That's a mere $24.24 a day! * Just over a dollar an hour.

Still, you might think the best financial advice is don't have children ifyou want to be "rich." Actually, it is just the opposite. What do you getfor your $160,140?

* Naming rights. First, middle, and last!
* Glimpses of God every day.
* Giggles under the covers every night.
* More love than your heart can hold.
* Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.
* Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.
* A hand to hold, usually covered with jelly or chocolate.
* A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites
* Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day.

For $160,140, you never have to grow up. You get to:
* finger-paint,
* carve pumpkins,
* play hide-and-seek,
* catch lightning bugs,
* never stop believing in Santa Claus.

You have an excuse to:
*keep reading the Adventures of Piglet and Pooh,
* watching Saturday morning cartoons,
* going to Disney movies,
* wishing on stars.
* You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets
*and collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay for Mother's Day, and cards with backward letters for Father's Day.

For $160,140, there is no greater bang for your buck. You get to be a hero just for:
* retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof,
* taking the training wheels off a bike,
* removing a splinter,
* filling a wading pool,
* coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs,
*and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.

You get a front row seat to history to witness the:
* first step,
* first word,
* first bra,
* first date, and
* first time behind the wheel.

You get to be immortal. You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren and great grandchildren. You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match. In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there under God. You have all the power to heal a boo-boo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits. So, one day they will, like you, love without counting the cost. That is quite a deal for the price!!!!!!!

I took the plunge

Between picking up 10 pounds that I really want to lose and knowing I need to begin exercising (for health, regardless of weight), I signed up at the Activity Center last week. Me! I would have never thought it. David has an automatic membership this semester since he's taking 4 hours here and it only costs $15/month for me (you can't beat that!). It's $5/visit for guests, so this emotionally obligates me to 3 visits a month.

Well, the rest of the story is that I got the group exercise schedule and figured out which ones I could go to, and yesterday, I went to my FIRST EVER group exercise class. Wow! It was Strengthen and Sculpt, and was a very good experience. There were only 4 of us, all girls -- that's 3 "participants" and the 1 instructor. I was probably the oldest of the 4, but not by much. And the three of us were similar as far as being in shape; the other two probably more so than me, but I could keep up okay.

I can't go today at all because of David's orientation, but I'll go as I can. David and I both did a little workout at home this morning; he did cardio on the elliptical machine and I did strengthening on the floor mat.

David didn't end up having quite as long of a day today as we thought he'd have; he thought he had to be at Tech at 8, but it's not 'til 11. So he's got some time to study and relax. He says they must just be measuring for scrubs and giving them some initial information before classes begin tomorrow. Well, at least we got a trial run at getting us all up and gone by around 7am.
