Hong Kong 3

It's 6am, and we're all wide awake. The kids were both asleep by 6:00 last night, and I wasn't too far behind them. I was in bed by 7:00. I just couldn't make it any longer. David wanted to stay up until at least 8:00, but I don't know whether he made it. He did make it longer than me, I do know that. Jayden didn't sleep through the night and was awake but in bed with us from about midnight until 1:00. Then we all went back to sleep until about 2:00, when I got up. Jayden was next, and then David. Joshua was awake somewhere in there, too. Around 4:00 we decided to go ahead and fix breakfast. The kids are already dressed and I've had my shower. I will probably try to take a nap later today or else I'll be really dragging for class tonight. I am working to get everything together for my first class tonight. There are still several things left to be done. I'll go next door to the university in a little while to meet Candy and the other Shue Yan folks and see the classroom and get copies made for class tonight. David will have to make another trip to the Park n Shop today -- I wonder if we'll have to go every day! We mostly need water. We've already opened our last bottle from what he bought yesterday. I'm sure he'll get some other things while he's there. Speaking of the Park n Shop, I want to tell you about David's shopping trip there yesterday. David went by himself while I stayed in the apartment with the kids. It's just down the street from the university; he said it's not a bad walk at all, and it won't be bad to take Joshua for us all to go when we can. David spent $231.50 at the Park n Shop! $231 -- Hong Kong dollars. The exchange rate is basically $7.50 to $1. So that's only about $30 USD (Whew!). In case you're curious about the prices (like I would be), here's what he bought and how much it cost:
2 bath towels and 2 washcloths, HK$65.20, US$8.69 (not bad!)
laundry detergent, HK$12.90, US$1.72
Trash bags, HK$9.90, US$1.32
2 frozen salmon steaks (two meals), HK$44.00, US$5.87 (not bad!)
frozen chicken fillets (package), HK$20.90, US$2.79
carrots, HK$5.90, US$0.79
celery, HK$6.90, US$0.92
liquid dish soap, HK$10.90, US$1.45
butter, HK$9.90, US$1.32
4 1-lt bottles of water, HK$19.60, US$2.61 (US$0.65/bottle)
small bunch of broccoli, HK$4.90, US$0.65
4 fuji apples, HK$11.60, US$0.39 each
1 dozen eggs, HK$8.90, US$1.19The sun is beginning to come up now. I'm sure I'll be tired later, but for now I'm wide awake. I think David's going to make us some stir-fry for lunch. There's a Chinese kitchen in the apartment (plus another separate American-style kitchen) with a wok! Neither of us have ever used a wok before, but it's worth a shot. We have the chicken and broccoli and carrots and some rice. (David says based on what he saw at the Park n Shop, we don't have to worry about not being able to get rice! My guess had been we shouldn't have a problem finding rice, oranges, or tea.) I also wanted to tell you about Pizza Hut -- there are some brochures and menus here in the apartment which were left by previous ULM travelers. It was pretty strange when the first menu choice I saw from Pizza Hut was their "Kabayaki Eel Pizza Combo...." I thought, well, I guess they would eat pizza a little differently than we do. Actually, the choices of available pizza toppings are fairly familiar: chicken, pepperoni, ham, pork, beef, italian sausage, bacon (apparently they enjoy their pork!), mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black olives, anchovies, corn (!), pineapple, tomato, crab sticks, chili, tuna, and extra cheese. They offer a "stuffed crust" pizza which is stuffed with sausage -- a big long link of sausage baked into the crust. I thought this was funny: the American Adventure pizza is pepperoni, corn and beef. They offer a set of specialty pizzas with a Thousand Island sauce base (rather than tomato sauce): Canadian Sunshine (bacon, corn, and pepperoni), Fishermen's Favourite (tuna fish, crab sticks, pineapple, onions, and green peppers)... and several others. They also have lots of pasta and rice and side dishes: seafood fettuccini, chicken fusilli florentine, chicken spaghetti in portuguese sauce, meaty mashed potato, grilled fish hoops, deep fried cuttlefish nuggets, baked eggplant bolognese, french style escargots, and chicken wings. Well, I'll bet we'll try at least something from Pizza Hut while we're here! I'll let you know how it goes! Now it's 7am and Jayden just fell asleep. Now I'll get back to class work! More later -- Aleecia
