Hong Kong 2
It's now Sunday morning for us, almost 11:00. We had a good night. I also thought about some other things from last night I wanted to say: When we got here, Candy (from Shue Yan College) had left us some goodies. There was a box of Corn Flakes, some sandwich bread, some Nescafe coffee, and some Oreo cookies on the table, and in the fridge she had left us some milk, ham, and cheese. Although her selections were not things we would pick out for ourselves, we appreciate the gesture very much! I know we will be well taken care of here. As we were getting settled in last night, David turned on the TV to find out what kind of channels we got. We knew our choices would be limited, but one thing was kind of neat: we get CBS! David Letterman was on. Ha! This morning he turned it onto another station which was more of a Chinese station but was in English. It seemed like kind of a variety channel; they had news and entertainment type segments and then a preacher. We left it on for a while but only halfway watched. It was fine, though. Last night before bed I put my oatmeal on to soak, so this morning for breakfast we had oatmeal, toast (with the bread Candy left), an orange and some prunes. I'm cooking us some beans and rice and sweet potatoes for lunch (all things we brought with us). I gave Jayden a bath last night, and the rest of us got up and got clean this morning. I didn't have a lot of hot water for my shower, but it was fine. We have two bathrooms which each have the hand-held type shower head (which is much better if the water is cold, in my opinion). Then we got dressed and had home church in the living room. We sang some songs with the kids and had a Bible story with them (we brought some of Joshua's Sunday school papers with us from the last several weeks) and then David and I read a little in the book of Joshua. Next week we'll try to go to the church in Kowloon I found on the Internet. It may take us an hour to get there, and we knew I had a lot of work to do today for class tomorrow night and that it would be hard to take up that much of our day traveling and all. Plus we didn't know how the night would go and if it would be asking too much of ourselves to try to get out like that this morning. Now Jayden is sleeping, Joshua is watching Minnesota Cuke on the DVD player we brought with us (which so far is working out great -- thanks, Mom!), I'm typing this on our laptop (and we can also use the school's laptop when David and I both need to work -- we only have one Internet connection, but still, two computers), and David has gone out to find the store (the Park n Shop) down the street. We definitely need him to try to get us some dish soap, laundry soap, and bottled water. We don't have much else to eat for meals, either. We brought plenty of snacks, but not much for meals. We'll see what he's able to find for us. The washing machine in the apartment is very small, and it's a combo washer and dryer, so we've been told it takes a while to complete a full cycle. But I figure a lot of my clothes can be hand-washed, and we could even pull a lot of the machine-washed clothes out to hang-dry. I know we'll be doing a good bit of laundry with the four of us. Speaking of laundry, I thought this was kind of funny: we all brought some extra clothes on board with us so that we'd have the option to change. None of us used any of our backup clothes except Jayden: we were already having to change her pants and tights before we got to Newark (she had a BIG diaper on the first plane trip). We're thinking, oh no! We still have a long way to go to be out of backup pants for her! But then I figured if we needed to we could buy her something in the airport in Newark. Well, somehow, her extra pair of tights didn't get packed (we had thought that tights may work better for us than socks as we traveled, since we have to fight her to keep her socks on, and I didn't want to be having to keep up with socks during the trip) -- so in the airport we did buy her a pair of socks. The only choices David saw were these red, white and blue USA socks -- which were cute, except she was wearing pink, pink, and pink -- or New York Yankees socks. David couldn't buy the Yankees socks, so USA it was! We did end up changing her shirt, too, but we were at least halfway through the flight to Hong Kong before that happened. And it was only because she had spilled water on herself, so I let her shirt dry and we ended up putting it back on her when we arrived. She did spill a lot of water on the plane. My lap ended up soaked twice, and David's once. So far it seems that I can check either email address account, but our home account is not letting us send. So if you can, use my school account address to email us -- we can reply easier (more directly) that way. Looking forward to hearing from you! We love you! I'll take and then share pictures soon. I don't have any to send yet! (I should have sent the camera with David to the store.... we'll have to do that next time.) With love from Hong Kong, Aleecia
